Solar Flares? What Solar Flares?

Do you remember the big Y2K scare a decade ago? At midnight on December 31, 1999, the electricity was supposed to go out, clocks, computers, and machines were going to crash, businesses were going to fail. People bought bottled water and flashlights and prepared for the worst. But, what happened? Nothing. There was a lot of media hype for no reason.

Yesterday, CBS News reported that the biggest solar flare since 2006 is headed to hit Earth today or tomorrow. Southern China has already seen disruptions in its radio communication. Read more about the impending solar flare. What does this mean for us? Some report that GPS devices might malfunction as a result of the disturbance of the earth’s geomagnetic field. Many of us rely on GPS for satellite television, mapping systems, and other daily conveniences.
